Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is providing sanctuary to asylum seekers in New York City

Bay Ridge Sanctuary Project accepts donations to continue supporting migrants and asylum seekers

Bay Ridge Sanctuary Project provides a safe and welcoming environment for asylum seekers arriving in New York City. City agencies, homeless shelters, and immigration non-profits have been pushed well beyond capacity as we continue to receive hundreds of new people a month, many bused against their will to NYC by Governor Abbot from Texas.

We are a grassroots collective organizing our community led by immigrant organizers who have been subject to inhumane immigration policies and systems ourselves. We make sure that asylum seekers are able enroll their children in city schools, have their immigration paperwork filed, and can be on their way to a family-sustaining career. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and its Congregation is generously hosting the Sanctuary Project.

We offer a safe, caring, and family-friendly community environment where new arrivals can rest and come together after being traumatized from a dangerous journey to New York City.

A Welcoming Space

We offer arrivals shelter, food, clothing, bags, sneakers, bedding, toiletries, diapers, and other baby products. This is all thanks to generous donations.

Basic Necessities

Our team of dedicated volunteers offer hot meals three times a day for our arrivals made from whole ingredients donated by local vendors and organizations.

Homemade Healthy Meals

Using a trauma-informed approach we conversationally interview sanctuary / asylum seekers to learn their immediate and medium-term needs and connect them with the necessary agencies and support groups.

Intake and Casework

Medical and Mental Support

We provide arrivals with PPE, covid tests, health screenings, and other supplies. Additionally we have licensed social workers provide group therapy and individual counseling and referrals, as well as group storytelling sessions, art projects, and musical gatherings to integrate our arrivals into community life.

We offer drop-in basic ESL classes every day to our arrivals. We also connect families to local elementary and secondary schools. Additionally, we connect adults to accessible community college and GED programs.

Educational Services

Legal Referrals

We assist newly arrived individuals and families with translating immigration documents, applications, and other important materials.

Translation Services

We connect asylum seekers with trusted attorneys who assist the community in navigating the immigration system.
